Remember when $5.00 would get you a HALF A TANK of gas?

Comments

My husband is buying a used motorcycle (40 miles to the gallon, we can't afford a new car or we'd buy a hybrid) and I walk EVERYWHERE, even if it's several miles.
:(
Yup, my dad bought me a tank of gas this weekend--$50. I almost plotzed, because I never put more than about $10 in at a time. Luckily, I don't drive much, so that tank should last me for many weeks.

[this bites]

yep...that's what I've been saying, $10 used to fill or almost fill your tank, now it will at least get you to the next ATM.

Hi!

Wow --- I gotta respect you for the walking thing --- that's great! I can't do that though. I don't do any kind of short trips like that where walking would work. And I always combine trips when I can. Plus, I'm kind of the car pool driver, because I drive Sarah & Deniro to their places plus my friend who works in the same place (and sometimes his wife, when there's room in my little car.)
It's just a crime that the price is as high as it is.

(oooh! a motorcycle --- cool!)

Isn't it pathetic? For years, I always allotted $10.00 a week for gas and that was plenty to get me to & from work and other places too. And it's not just because I'm old and that's what the prices were like a billion years ago, you know?

ha! Your "getting to the next ATM" remark is so sad but true. Plus, then you have to worry about the FEE the stinkin ATM will charge you

wah.
That was really nice of your dad, Redz. But look at the cost --- $50.00! That's like a birthday present or a Christmas present. That's terrible.
At least it'll last you for a couple of weeks if you're frugal. But think of the people who have to drive alot and that's normal for them to have to spend each week.. Yikes.
I heard from some insurance guy that you drive to work every day. **dodges slap in head**
Bwahahaha! Bastards!
Commuting SUCKS!
I'm so sorry YGRS. (psst, Deniro! Hide yer piggeh bank!)
Everyone I know is cutting back on expenses. I hope you make it through the week OK.
Short term, we need to take united action. Don't buy gas from the two biggest oil companies, Exxon and Mobil (which are now one). Buyers control the marketplace! We can have an impact by acting together.
Long term, there'll have to be big changes. Mass transit? People abandoning their cars beside the road? More horses, bikes, motorcycles? Alternative fuel?

my little mind is easily distracted...all of a sudden I'm forgetting the Madness that is The High Cost of Gas, and I'm wondering --- hey! how the hell did you make your words be BLUE???
&:o?

You said don't buy gas from the two biggest oil companies --- so are you saying that places like LukeOil (sp?) is cheaper than Exxon and Mobil? (and come from a different place?) Does it make a difference where I buy my gas from???

Alternate fuel --- definately has to happen. Eventually we're going to run out of gas, so why not start looking for a better fuel now while there's no immediate crippling crises.
Zay blue, you like eet? Tomorrow you come back and I make red for you, OK? Because you so nice, no charge.

Yeah, gas prices will vary everywhere. The idea is, Mobil & Exxon are the biggest. So, start at the top. IF everyone boycotted M. & E., gas prices might come down.

She's not telling how she got the bluie.

I find that I'm putting the same amount of dollars in my tank and just not driving if I can help it. In fact, stheriously, this summer I'm setting aside a few days a week to bike or walk to work. A friend of mine is Dutch, and he says Europe has been paying these prices for a long time.

Gotta go burn some liquid gold so I can have some food tonight. Byeeeee!!

Yep --- I've heard that gas has long been this expensive over in Europe.
But it still sucks.

2 wrongs do not make a right.(but 3 lefts can make a right, but that's different.)
&;o)
Ow do you mayke zee blue??? Does ygrs not have zee same choices on her comment menu zat ozerh Voxers do??? No?

Newsflash from Norway:

1 US$=5 norwegian kroner (kr).

1 gallon=3.789 liters.

1liter of gas= 12 kr.

YGRS, you would have to pay ~5l*12(kr)/5($)=12 $ for the same amount of gas if you were to buy it here!

And, if I may add, your cars get many more miles per gallon.
No fair, Europeans get the way cool looking cars, that use less gas.
So, ...you have the sporting, efficient cars, ...oh and you have the superior public transportation systems, ...now could you please invent an alternative fuel?
I'd like to invent a way we could all work from home.

I'd like to invent a way we could all work from home.

OMG, pleeeease!!!! I wanna work from home so bad.

holy shit. That's outrageous...That's just so wrong.

(And just think of all the gas I'd waste driving there just to fill up...)
&;oP

I totally agree --- both on the alternative fuel thing and the working from home thing. There's got to be a better way (for alot of stuff!)
Oh, yes-that would be a lot of gas wasted! :p But seriously, it is insanely expensive here!
It's almost as if we're working in order to put GAS in our cars to drive to work!!
[this is good]
Yich. It's so bad.
My car gets 13.5mpg in "city" driving -- *sigh*
But I do recall 26 cent/gallon gas when I was a little kid and driving to Wisconsin in the summertime-- imagine that......my parents thought it was a high price.
Sad, but that's actually true. Living paycheck to paycheck --- hand to mouth.
Yikes.
You know how they pay some farmers not to raise crops??? I want someone to pay me not to work! That way I'd save on gas and car upkeep and all kinds of stuff. I'd be helping the environment too.
Me too! I absolutely remember gas prices that low, too. And when it hit $1.00, people were angry. And cars used to get higher mileage years ago, too. Why did they stop getting like 25 and 35 miles per gallon? I know my Hyundai's average on gas mileage, but it's not like my cars were years ago.
I don't mean to sound like an old woman, but alot more these days, I find myself missing alot of things the way they used to be.

*sigh.*

The price of gas makes me see red! ;-p

That's terrible.
I can understand why driving habits are different in Europe. Who the hell can afford prices like that. Wow.

Yikes!!!
Me too!!!

=8o\

Yes, things are tougher in many many ways than they used to be. Easier in some, but still -- I don't think there were so many people who were so "at risk" -- you know? So many bankruptcies and foreclosures and hunger, now. Things are just messed up. REALLY messed up.
Giant red type! How did you do that? Is it OK to ask? It's wonderful!
:p stupid gas

...makes me glad that I take the bus..

There is something so not right about this. There are people who are paying more for the gas to get to work than they are paying for their house payment or rent. People have to be able to get to their jobs in order to have their jobs to feed their families and keep a roof over their head. It shouldn't be so hard.

And all the big oil companies that are making record profits are still getting HUGE tax breaks.
